Concrete blocks are used extensively in residential buildings. They are used to form exterior, and in some instances interior walls. Concrete blocks may be purchased in a variety of sizes and shapes. In general terms, concrete blocks refer to hollow concrete masonry units, usually 8”x 8”x 16” in dimensions. The actual size is 7 5/8”x 7 5/8”x 15 5/8”. These dimensions allow for a 3/8” mortar joint. Therefore, distance form the centerline of one mortar joint to the other centerline of the next will be 8 or 16 inches. A wide variety of decorative concrete block are available. The may be used to form a screen, fence or wall. Use of decorative blocks should not be overlooked when searching for innovative materials. The application of concrete block is limited only to the designer’s imagination.
