When determining which style of house to build, remember housing styles really do tie closely to geography and work best where they are popular, although you can build a New England style home in Texas, but it's not highly likely that someone out there would do it. Home styles as a rule generally conform to the geographical location because homes are designed to adapt and withstand weather conditions in the region of proposed building. For example, in Nevada a southwestern style would be popular because of the large roof overhang, which minimizes the amount of direct sunlight entering the home in turn controlling cooling cost. A Mediterranean home with it’s low roof pitches works well in warmer regions where snow is not a factor.

If your residing area has an architectural review board, they will be able to answer many if not all of your questions regarding what type of home is acceptable for your residing area.

Log cabins and small log cabin construction was introduced to North America in the 1700s when Swedish settlers brought building customs from their home country. The Homestead Act of 1862 influenced the design of America’s log cabins. The Homestead Act gave "homesteaders" rights to open land, however, it required that they cultivate the land and build homes or small cabins at least ten by twelve feet in size, with at least one glass window.

Different from any other house, the contemporary house was a favorite among many during the 70's and 80's. Modern looking by definition, the contemporary house demonstrates the use of geometric shapes in design, with simple single pitched or flat roofs, which were often retrofitted with solar panels giving the house an even more modern application.
