Lowes.com How-To Tip: Lighting

There are three basic types of lighting: ambient, task and decorative. Although each option can be used alone, combining all three makes a room more comfortable and functional.

Ambient lighting- Also called background or general light, ambient lighting bathes a room in a soft, warm glow while eliminating any harsh contrasts between bright and dark.
Task lighting- Task lighting focuses on illuminating a particular activity area. Task lighting is needed for reading, writing, cooking and grooming, among other things, and requires a bulb of 60 watts or more to be most effective.
Decorative lighting- Take advantage of light's dramatic powers and use decorative lighting to draw the eye to a particular spot. Decorative lighting highlights an object or area in a room.
