Lowes.com How-To Tip: Living Air Cleaners

Many houseplants actually clean pollutants out of the air. Basically, these plants work as nature's air filters by adding oxygen and humidity to your indoor environment. Chemicals such as formaldehyde, benzene and trichloroethylene are present in today's tightly insulated homes and offices. At best these chemicals can be irritating, in some cases they are dangerous.

Some of the most efficient pollutant-fighting plants are readily available in the garden center greenhouse. The list includes bromeliad, aloe, spider plant, weeping fig, philodendron, chrysanthemum, dracaena, pothos, English ivy and peace lily. Note that aloe, philodendron, chrysanthemum, and English ivy are known to be poisonous to pets and humans.
In general, the more plants you have in the room, the better. One large plant per 100 square feet of space is considered the minimum to be effective. Because each plant has an affinity for different toxins, use a mixture of plants.
