Lowes.com How-To Tip: Weatherstripping a Door Doors require two different kinds of weatherstripping: one for the top and sides and another for the bottom. Both types must be used for the best energy efficiency. A 1/8" space between a standard exterior door and its threshold is equivalent to a two square inch hole in the wall. To install self-adhesive foam on the top and sides of the door, first use soap and water to clean the stop molding (the place on the doorframe where the door makes contact and is stopped from swinging any farther). Let the area dry thoroughly. Cut the foam to fit each side, peel off the backing to expose the adhesive, and press it into place. Close the door tightly and leave it closed for an hour or so to help the adhesive set. To fill the space underneath the door, use a sweep that hangs down between the bottom of the door and the threshold. Cut the sweep to the width of the door. With the door closed, screw the sweep to the door so that the bottom of the sweep contacts the floor. Be sure the sweep is level so there are no gaps between it and the floor. Visit Lowes.com
